What is your current position at FCR?

Senior Tax Manager

When did you working at FCR?

November 18, 2024

Can you share your career journey at FCR and how you progressed to your current role?

After spending over 12 years at a national firm, I was presented with a unique opportunity to join an exciting new venture. FCR already had a presence in the North Bay market, but was looking at establishing roots in the community by opening an office locally to compliment their existing Sudbury and Espanola offices.

How has FCR supported your professional development and career growth?

FCR has given me the opportunities to work on projects and transactions in areas outside of my main practice focus prior to joining FCR. This has allowed me to grow the breadth of my tax expertise and deepen my existing knowledge base in my main practice areas.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at FCR?

Apply! FCR is a great place to work. The entire team, across all levels and functions, care about not only your professional development, but care about you, the individual. In a workplace of this size to see every person happy to be at work and engaged in what they are working on is contagious and makes every day coming to work a great day.

What’s your personal guiding principle? Is there a quote or belief that influences how you work or live?

Always give back. Throughout my career I have had some great mentors that helped my professional development and growth to get me to where I am today. I believe in reciprocating that. I always make myself available to assist in junior staff for technical questions, professional development or anything else they want to discuss. I take this principal outside of work as well. After being an active member of the West Nipissing Soccer club as a youth, I served as a board member and referee coordinator for the club for over 15 years.

What is the most fulfilling part of your position?

Working with clients to help tailor a solution that meets their specific needs. Unlike mandatory tax compliance, clients are appreciative when you help structure their affairs in a tax effective manner and they can really see the tangible benefits our services provide.

What initially attracted you to FCR?

Being a Northern Ontario owned and operated firm. Previously when I was part of a large national firm, the firm made decisions that were tailored to best suit the large metropolitan markets. Those decisions did not always scale or serve our local Northern Ontario market effectively. At FCR, everyone is local to the market so every decision that is made is what is best for our clients and communities.

How important is work culture to you, and how does it influence your overall career satisfaction?

Next to work-life balance, which FCR gives you the flexibility and autonomy to make sure you get the right compliment to suit your needs, work culture would be the next most important factor to me. The average person spends about a quarter of their total weekly hours at work. You want to ensure that you are in an environment where you want to be and happy to be there. As noted in my previous replies, the culture of everyone wanting each other to grow to become their best professional self and decisions being made that are best for our local communities make this a work culture I want to be a part of.
