“My name is Ryan Houle, and I am a Staff Accountant at FCR LLP. I’ve worked here for the past three summers and have now begun my full-time career with the firm. I first joined FCR in 2022 during my first year at Laurentian University. I had really enjoyed my accounting classes both in high school and university and wanting to get a head start in the field, I decided to apply to accounting firms in the city of Sudbury.

FCR was the first to respond, offering me the opportunity to come in for an interview. During that interview, it quickly became clear that FCR was where I wanted to be. The employees were friendly, transparent, and took the time to show me what I could expect from the role. Shortly afterward, they offered me the position—which I accepted without hesitation.

A quote I live by is: “I would rather step up to the plate and strike out than never go up at all.”

Stepping into the professional world of accounting with no prior experience and just one year of university was daunting. However, FCR eased that pressure by providing thorough training, assigning me a mentor, and maintaining an open-door policy that allowed me to learn at my own pace and ask for help whenever needed.

When I started, I was one of only four university students working at the firm. Each year I returned, that number grew, reflecting the impressive growth and development of FCR in a short period of time.

Beyond the valuable career experience, I’ve gained in the business and accounting industry, FCR has also supported my academic journey. While serving as Vice President of the Laurentian Business Student Council, I organized events for business students at the university. FCR consistently supported both me and the council by sponsoring events, attending them, and helping in any way they could. This speaks volumes about FCR’s culture—one that values not only creating a positive workplace but also being an active and generous member of the communities in Sudbury, Espanola, and North Bay, where our offices are located.

Now, as a full-time Staff Accountant, I’m grateful for how much FCR has contributed to my professional growth. I’ve had the opportunity to apply my skills in various areas of accounting, including audit and tax, while working on meaningful projects and meeting with clients and businesses throughout the Sudbury area.
